Lulie Wallace - Internship Program

Fall 2022

I started my career in Charleston, SC after earning a BA in Studio Art from the College of Charleston. My work ranges from fine art to my textile and wallpaper line, and over the years we have had the wonderful opportunity to bring in college students to intern each semester. While I live and paint out of my studio in Columbus, GA, prospective students have the opportunity to work from our studio in Charleston, SC. We are a small and mighty team of creatives and self-starters, and our internship program has become a very special part of what we do each semester! 

My main goal for our internship is that I want our interns to be encouraged and see the behind of the scenes of turning your artwork into a career. When I was growing up the only people I came in contact with that were making a living as an artist were my teachers. Our team hopes to show our interns the multiple ways you can make a job out of being a creative and the rich community that surrounds it!

Studio Responsibilities:
• Packing and shipping orders in Shopify each week including fine artwork, fabric, wallpaper, swatches, products and prints
• Cutting fabric and wallpaper swatches, and assembling header cards
• Shipping weekly swatch requests from interior designers and assembling bulk requests from our showroom partners.
• Preparing artwork for shipment: attaching hanging systems, painting the sides of panels with gesso, and assisting with framing and finishing details
• Assisting with managing inventory for swatches, prints and products, and updating Shopify as needed

Semester Learning Activities:
• Pattern making from painted and digital motifs, including an overview of how we use procreate, photoshop, and illustrator for our pattern making process
• Website and newsletter design
• Overview of each of our branding elements and how it was designed
• Shared resources that we've found helpful in starting a career in the arts
• Interaction with other professional artists + interns in our shared Slate Studios workspace
